Microsoft stopped supporting and developing new features or updates for the VBScript website programming language, also known as Classic ASP, several years ago. After 27 years of operation and support for this specific technology, the company is now planning to completely remove the Classic ASP scripting language in a future version of Windows Home or Server Edition.
A few days ago, the company announced that VBScript, short for Visual Basic Scripting Edition, has been officially deprecated in an update to the “Deprecated features for Windows client” list. “VBScript is being deprecated,” Microsoft states. “In future versions of Windows, VBScript will first be available as an on-demand feature before it is fully removed from the operating system.”
VBScript or Classic ASP made its debut in 1996 as a server-side programming language for dynamic websites. It was based on the core of the well-known Visual Basic language and, in combination with data storage in Access or Microsoft SQL Server databases, could be used for the development of e-commerce stores and dynamic websites.
Websites written in Classic ASP / VBScript are hosted ONLY on Windows servers, meaning that their hosting requires servers running the Windows operating system. They cannot be hosted on Linux or Unix servers, nor on cloud platforms such as Azure in their traditional form.
The latest version of Classic ASP, version 5.8, dates back to 2010. Since then, Microsoft has stopped releasing new versions or supporting updates for this technology. At the same time, most third-party companies that developed extensions and add-ons for Classic ASP have either stopped development or shut down entirely.
As expected—and as we have been informing our clients for quite some time—it was only a matter of time before support for this outdated technology was officially discontinued.
Therefore, older websites built in Classic ASP should proceed as quickly as possible with upgrading their websites to ASP.NET, PHP, or another modern technology stack.
