Microsoft will no longer support Classic ASP / VBScript

Microsoft ceased supporting and developing new features or updates for the web programming language VBScript or Classic ASP years ago. After 27 years of operation and support for this technology, they plan to completely remove the Classic ASP scripting language in a future release of Windows Home or Server Edition.

The company recently announced that VBScript, short for Visual Basic Scripting Edition, has been deprecated in an update to the "Removed Features for Windows Client" list. "VBScript is deprecated," says Microsoft. "In future Windows releases, VBScript will be available as a feature on-demand before it is removed from the operating system.

VBScript or Classic ASP made its debut in 1996 as a server-side programming language for dynamic websites. It used the core of the well-known Visual Basic and, in combination with data storage in Access or Microsoft SQL Server databases, could be used to create e-shops or dynamic websites.

Websites written in Classic ASP/VBScript can ONLY be hosted on Windows servers, meaning hosting websites with this technology requires servers with the Windows operating system. They cannot be hosted on Linux or Unix servers, nor on cloud/Azure platforms.

The last version of Classic ASP, version 5.8, dates back to 2010. Since then, Microsoft has ceased releasing new versions or supporting updates for this technology. Additionally, companies that developed extensions for Classic ASP have either stopped implementing them or have shut down.

As expected, and as we've been informing our clients for some time, it was only a matter of time before official support for this outdated technology was discontinued.

Therefore, websites that are built using Classic ASP should promptly consider upgrading to ASP.NET, PHP, or another modern technology.
